The Field GameCapture the Flag

Capture the Flag is the second Field Game concept for 2026, a city-wide, points-based game that runs across Toowoomba from Saturday 26 September to Sunday 4 October. Unlike Hunt the Gnome, it isn't about finding one hidden prize. It's about racking up points in as many ways as you can, for a shot at real prizes.

It's free to play through the app. Download it, get sorted into a team, and start earning.

There are three ways to earn points during the game.

Exploring. You earn points for getting out and moving, up to a daily target of 7,500 steps, tracked like a built-in fitness app. The app has a wheelchair mode built in for players who need it. While you're out exploring, keep an eye out for QR power-ups hidden around the city, and participating businesses you can visit for extra points.

Capturing flags. Flags appear on the in-app map. Walk up to one and tap 'capture' to claim it. Some flags have a challenge attached, and completing that challenge earns more points than a straightforward capture. Once you've captured a flag, you can't capture it again, but other players can still capture that same flag. On the map, a flag's colour shows whichever team has captured it the most, not who got there first. Flags aren't all shown to every player on every day, but across the game, everyone gets equal opportunity at every flag.

Capturing properties. You can also earn points, plus real-world rewards, by capturing and holding properties across the city. See "How do I capture a property?" below for how that works.

The Earn screen tracks your exploring stats as you go.

The game runs on Gnuggets, which you earn by playing, plus a separate points balance. They both go up at the same rate. The only difference is that you can spend Gnuggets in the Rewards Centre, which doesn't affect your points total.

Points are your permanent score. They only ever go up, and they're never really spent, even when you use them to buy a property, your points total doesn't drop. Buying a property just needs your points total to clear the current price as a threshold. If someone later outbids you and takes the property, you get back what you put in, so points never actually leave your account.

Gnuggets are the only currency you actually spend. You use them in the Rewards Centre, either on real-world discounts and vouchers, things like an Oktoberfest Adult Pass, a free dance class at Dance Connection, or a discount at Playful Pup Espresso, or on entries into the Prize Draw. Any Gnuggets you haven't spent expire when the game ends, so it's worth cashing them in before 4 October.

You play both as an individual and as part of a team. When you join, you're automatically sorted into one of four teams. Teams are locked in for this version of the game, though the ability to swap teams may come in a future edition.

Your team's standing is based on territory, meaning the properties your team collectively holds across the city. The more properties your team owns at the end of the game, the better your team's chances.

Reading the map. Unclaimed flags and properties show up purple. Once a property is captured, it switches to its owner's team colour. Flags work differently, since more than one player can capture the same one, so a flag switches to the colour of whichever team has captured it the most. You can also check live team standings, shown as a percentage of territory held, at the top of the Map screen.

Properties can only be held by one player at a time. To capture one, visit its location and 'buy' it using your points.

It works as an automatic sale. If your points total can clear more than the current owner paid, you buy it on the spot, no negotiation needed, and your points total doesn't drop, that value is simply tied up in the property instead. For example, if the current owner paid 100 points, offering 101 buys it from them instantly. If someone later outbids you and takes it, you get back what you paid, so you're never out of pocket, you just lose the daily reward.

Owning a property pays off daily. Once a day, at a random time, the current owner receives one of three rewards:

1. A points bonus
2. A real-world prize, such as a free coffee or a pastry voucher
3. An entry into the Prize Draw

Since properties can be bought out from under you at any time, holding onto a valuable one for the daily reward means being ready to outbid whoever tries to take it.

There are three ways to win.

Top individual player. Whoever has the most points when the game ends at 5pm on 4 October wins $2,000. If there's a tie, whoever has captured the most flags wins.

Winning team. The team holding the most territory, meaning the most properties collectively owned, wins for their team. One player from that team is chosen at random to receive $500. If teams are tied on territory, the team that has collectively captured the most flags wins.

Rewards Centre prize draws. At any point during the game, you can spend Gnuggets in the Rewards Centre for entries into a prize draw. Each entry you buy is one entry into that prize's draw, redeemed automatically the moment you buy it, there's no separate redemption step. You can buy as many entries as you can afford. Draws are made randomly after the game, with winners contacted using the details they provided. Current draws include:

Download The Field Game app, available on iOS and Android, create your account, and you'll be sorted into a team automatically. From there, head to Home to see your points and Gnuggets balance, Map to find flags and properties near you, Earn to see everything on offer, and Rewards when you're ready to spend your Gnuggets. There's also a Leaderboard to check your ranking, and a dashboard showing how you're tracking overall.

The game kicks off at 8am on Saturday 26 September and runs until 5pm on Sunday 4 October 2026. It's free to join, with no minimum age, the same as the original hunt. Parental guidance is recommended for players under 18.
